Alcoa Inc (NYSE:AA) – Always doing its bit for the environment
On 22 May 2013 Alcoa Inc (NYSE:AA) announced that its $21M Alcoa Wheel and Transportation Products cast-house expansion at the Barberton, Ohio plant was expected to cut the total amount of energy that was used in the aluminum recycling process, for forged wheels, by half. In effect, this would reduce greenhouse gases and improve the overall sustainability and efficiency of its manufacturing process. This recycling facility is a first in its field, in North America. It utilizes advanced technology in the production of wheels from scrap and re-melted aluminum.
On 28 May 2013 AA and Ma’aden, a Saudi Arabian Mining Company announced that it had completed an engineered wetlands wastewater-management system at the Ma’aden-Alcoa project site, in Saudi Arabia. This is a first-of-its-kind in the country.
This newly-constructed system will reduce the demand of water by almost 2M US gallons/per day. This will help save in excess of $7million (SAR 26 million) on an annual basis. This amount would have been channelized towards the purchase of fresh water. On 28 May, The Central Park Conservancy nearly doubled the number of re-cycling cans in Manhattan with the addition of over 400 cans within the Park premises. This was an effort towards reduce rats, improving visitor safety and increasing sustainability.
On a smaller scale…
Aluminum cans are probably as ubiquitous as plastic bags are. However, unlike plastic that trashes the planet, aluminum cans, can actually be good for earth, but only if everyone makes an effort to recycle them. In the United States alone, over 100 billion aluminum cans are sold, annually. And less than 50% are recycled. In other countries, almost an equal number of aluminum cans are either sent to landfills or incinerated. This is a strain on the environment in terms of energy and resource waste.
The good news
There is absolutely no limit to the number of times that one can recycle aluminum that’s exactly why recycling aluminum is considered to be such a boon for our environment. It is a highly sustainable metal, and extensive recycling does not lead to material loss. Alcoa Inc (NYSE:AA) understands this and continues its efforts on a much larger scale, thus providing a much larger impact. Aluminum is the most recycled material on the planet and over the years, Alcoa has made a conscious to give back to the planet what it is getting from it.
