What is cloud computing?

In cloud computing, the “cloud” is a chain of hardware, storage, networks, interfaces and services. All of these are combined to deliver various computing aspects, as a service. Based on user demand, infrastructure, software and over-the-internet storage can be actioned via cloud services. It is essentially the next era in the evolution of the internet.

Why are people opting for it?

Cloud computing has four specific features that are definite plusses- It is a flexible medium and scaling is very easily achievable. It offers self-service provisioning as well as automatic de-provisioning. It has application programming interfaces and metering and billing of service-usage is possible in a cost-effective, pay-as-you-go model. This versatility is what makes businesses and individuals opt for cloud-based services.

Cloud computing is available in various forms. There are private clouds, public clouds and hybrid clouds, which combine both public and private. The latter are a combination of both. Using cloud computing can bring about a sea-change in the way companies and businesses offer services to their customers, forge alliances with their partners and deal with their suppliers. Market giants such as Amazon and Google have not lost any time with moving a large segment of their IT resources to the “cloud”. And so also, Brocade Communications Systems, Inc (NASDAQ:BRCD) will make the most of the demand and help its customers break out of the shackles of a conventional computing environment with the services they provide.
