The digital frontier is the new battleground for businesses and McDonald’s Corporation (NYSE:MCD) recently announced the hiring of Atif Rafiq in the newly-created role of Chief Digital Officer with effect from October 21. Atif Rafiq has years of experience in crafting digital strategies and creating viable solutions and most recently held positions at Amazon.com and Yahoo!
As the world’s leading food service retailer, McDonald’s Corporation(NYSE:MCD) is hoping that Rafiq will guide the thrust to help make the restaurant experience more in line with technological trends and also provide a better avenue for customers to interact with the company.
On the face of it, a better candidate could not have been chosen since Atif Rafiq has built quite an impressive resume in Silicon Valley especially in the area of global product strategy. He has over 20 years experience in the tech industry and before working with Amazon and Yahoo, he also held positions with AOL and Goldman Sachs and at one point earlier in his career, he was CEO of a successful company that was backed by venture capital.
When asked about his new position, Rafiq said that he is looking forward to working with the global giant and he is looking to not only help the company build its customer base but he also wants to make his own mark in the process. Don Thompson, President and CEO of McDonald’s Corporation(NYSE:MCD) has made it clear that the company is just as excited to have made the acquisition and he believes that, “Bringing Atif onto our leadership team represents a tremendous opportunity for McDonald’s to elevate our restaurant experience and strengthen the bond we share with our customers in new ways”.
Based on track record alone, the pairing seems to be a perfect one and this bodes well for any digital strategy that is being crafted by McDonald’s Corporation(NYSE:MCD) as they seek to continue their dominance in the food service industry.
