Alpha Natural Resources, Inc (NYSE:ANR) is a company that supplies and exports metallurgical coal that is used in the steel-making process. It also supplies thermal coal to various manufacturing industries and electric utilities and exports thermal coal as well. As of 31 December 2012, ANR operated 107 mines as well as 26 coal preparation plants situated in Central and Northern Appalachia and the Powder River Basin. It operates in the Western coals Operations and Eastern Coal Operations segments. The Eastern Coal Operations is made up of mines in Central and Northern Appalachia, the road construction business and the coal brokerage activities. Western Coal Operations is made up of two Powder River Basin mines situated in Wyoming.
