Alcatel Lucent SA (NYSE:ALU) and Qualcomm are planning on collaborating to develop small cell-base stations that will help improve wireless connectivity. These base stations will enhance 3G, 4G and Wi-Fi networks and improve the connectivity in residential and enterprise environments.

ALU has a proven track record when it comes to innovation and expertise in the small cell solutions field. Qualcomm technologies, which is a Qualcomm subsidiary, is a leader in the mobile and networking-technology fields. A combined effort between these two companies is bound to be a potent one and it will provide ultra-broadband wireless communications.

The very best services

This collaboration will throw these two industry leaders together to provide top-of-the-line wireless connectivity in urban areas, enterprise venues and shopping malls.

The mobile landscape is metamorphosing at a very rapid pace and the demand for smartphones, tablets and various other mobile devices in an ever-growing one. This means profitability for the industry, but it also stresses the network.

Retaining customers and increasing revenue is also a lot about upgrading the services that are being provided. Video and gaming applications require a lot of bandwidth and wireless network providers as well as service provider welcome the expansion of the maze of small cells. This enhances the mobile data capacity and improves network coverage. Another important point that the consumers are looking for is cost-effective options.

The combined effort

ALU and Qualcomm are planning on investing jointly in a strategic R&D program that will lend impetus to this enhancement. They will be developing the next-generation of ALU’s small-cell products. These feature the FSM9900 small cell chiplets family from Qualcomm. The investment would be borne by both the companies. Michel Combes,

Alcatel Lucent SA (NYSE:ALU), Chief Executive Officer said that this collaboration is a perfect illustration of the Shift Plan that has been announced by the company last month.
