Netflix Inc (NASDAQ:NFLX) Acquisition Of Documentary Would Help

Netflix Inc (NASDAQ:NFLX) has just announced that, it is now owns original documentary –The Square made by Jehane Noujaim.  Making the announcement was the Vice President of Original Documentary programming at Netflix, Lisa Nishimura.  The Square poignantly captures one of modern history’s pivotal moments, tracing the struggle of the Egyptians during 2011 to 2013, to improve their country.

The acquisition of the documentary is indeed a new programming step for Netflix as it addresses an ‘under-distributed genre’ of entertainment. Post the success of its popular television show ‘House of Cards,’ and other comedy specials, appealing documentaries, Netflix has set out on newer content programming.

Speaking about The Square, Noujaim, who is the producer and director of the film, commented that the documentary was made for purpose of inspiring people. The goal was to reach a global audience and by partnering Netflix, the documentary would be available to audience who appreciate different –genres of movies and documentaries.

In the past quarter, Netflix has caught up with closest competitor HBO, a subsidiary of Time Warner Inc. (NYSE:TWX). Netflix subscriber base, according to its just reported numbers is 40.3 million worldwide, with 31 million of them in the US itself. HBO on the other hand has 41 million US-based customers and 117million worldwide viewers.

Netflix pace of growth in the recent quarters has been note-worthy and is driven by innovate content programming backed by high quality of streaming.

Content programming is slowing becoming the differentiator in this segment and The Square acquisition will surely allow Netflix to take giant strides in the world of online content streaming!

Investors are driven by the positive response to compelling content creation and original content programming. As Netflix continues to produce more defining programs such as the House of Cards and four episodes of ‘Dexter’ (by signing a new deal with CBS Corporation (NYSE:CBS) Netflix growth will remain steadily upwards.
