This article addresses the new product releases of two semiconductor companies: Advanced Micro Devices and Atmel Corporation.

Advanced Micro Devices, Inc.(NYSE:AMD) is a California-based semiconductor company best known for its line of central processing units, including the AMD Athlon and AMD Phenom products, and its graphics processing units, including the AMD Radeon brand. On Oct. 1st, the company demonstrated the first network function virtualization (NFV) solution of its 64-bit ARM-based SoC. The company stated that it sees NFV as an “innovative solution” because its allows for the deployment and management of network and telecommunication services to be simplified.

During the mid-2000s, the products offered by Advanced Micro Devices rivaled, and often surpassed, those from longtime industry leader Intel. Recently, the company’s trading prices have fallen. AMD’s new initiatives could help boost the company’s revenue stream.

Atmel Corporation(NASDAQ:ATML) also produces semiconductor units, including microcontrollers, capacitive touch products, electrically erasable programmable read-only devices, and automotive electronics. The California-based company made several announcements last week, including the development of a new family of Cortex-M7-based MCUs. The new devices are designed to address certain high-growth markets, including wearable devices. Additionally, the products will be used for both automotive and industrial applications that require power efficiency and high performance.

Additionally, Atmel Corporation also announced Oct. 1st that it had joined ARM TechCon in the development of the Internet of Things platform. The California-based company also published a press release detailing the new Cortex-A5-based MPUs that are optimized for 720p video playback.
