New York, NY – GDP INSIDER  –  10/13/2014.

This article discusses three consumer computer and smartphone companies: Microsoft Corporation(NASDAQ:MSFT), Nokia Corporation (ADR)(NYSE:NOK), and Blackberry Ltd(NASDAQ:BBRY)

Microsoft Corporation(NASDAQ:MSFT) is currently pushing an advertising campaign that places its new Surface Pro 3 tablet product in direct competition with the MacBook Air. The move functions as an attempt to change the perception that the product would be more likely to compete with the iPad, a product which is significantly less expensive than Microsoft’s offering. Nevertheless, it seems unlikely that the Surface Pro 3 will carve out a sizeable portion of the market given the poor selections in the company’s application store and the general disdain for Windows 8.

A company with close ties to Microsoft, Nokia Corporation (ADR)(NYSE:NOK) is also dealing with a perception issue: the company no longer makes cell phones, yet the company is still commonly associated with that product field because Microsoft continues to use the company’s name for its smartphone products. Moreover, the company’s homeland, Finland, recently lost its AAA rating after being downgraded by Standard & Poor to AA+ on Friday. The company now produces smartphone apps for both the Windows Phone and the Android platform.

Blackberry Ltd(NASDAQ:BBRY), a company whose very name has virtually become synonymous with struggles in the consumer tech industry, has received some media attention for its new BlackBerry Passport product. However, the phone only received a 3.5 out of 5 rating on CNET and its release was overshadowed by the well-publicized and marketed launch of the iPhone 6. Nevertheless, the company’s products, which feature both a large touchscreen and a physical keyboard, have their own niche.
